Knowing the etymology of the words gives us an idea of what this word actually means. At the beginning of this presentation, we answered this question with the children from 4th,5th, and 6th grade. The word polygon comes from the Greek “polugonos”, but over time, it has evolved into the word “polygon”. “Poly” means “many” and “gon” means “angled”. Knowing this, opened the door to recognizing, classifying, and naming shapes according to their characteristics.
In addition, we bring the classifications and characteristics of the polygons to the children’s consciousness in order to encourage them to become aware of what they already know.
After making the labels and having the children read and place them, they started to make different combinations using the material to form regular and irregular polygons, write their parts, and give them the right name considering the number of angles and their characteristics.
