What is one the most difficult aspects of the English language? We could all agree that prepositions are one of the hardest items for non-native speakers. That’s why Phrasal verbs (verbs that carry a preposition which changes its meaning) are so challenging for students. In order to make this challenge less discouraging, in ESO2 we learn Phrasal Verbs in the following way:
Each cooperative group is given 3 different Phrasal Verbs. Using a bilingual and monolingual dictionary the students in the group help each other and write down a definition, a translation and a sentence for each Phrasal Verb. Then, each cooperative group shares with the whole class this information and everybody votes for one of these 3 Phrasal Verbs. Therefore, at the end of the activity, the students have voted for 8 Phrasal Verbs (one for each cooperative group) which are the verbs that will come up in the exam. Students find this activity exciting, because they take part in the decision-making of their learning and they are more engaged in the research and study of these verbs, which are often seen as hard and confusing.
