The importance of writing and reading at the elementary level is the basis for communication, expression of thoughts and understanding language.
Both grades 123 and 456 use Montessori material to analyse the structure of sentences, starting with simple phrases, working their way up to complex forms.
Sentence analysis work is both a help to reading comprehension and an aid to syntax (the arrangement of words in the sentence). It also aids the child in developing writing skills. Children realize the relationships of words to one another in order that the language makes sense. Syntax is very important in the English language because English is not an inflected language.
Children of all grades have an opportunity to create and study the combination of words by inventing their own sentences or by using English books to understand what is written.
