In the first presentation we take a plane board and place a piece of string across the board that reaches from one side to the other, explaining to the children that the line goes on and on, similar to the rays of the sun.
Smaller pieces of string are then cut and placed on the board, the terms ´Ray and origin´ are given for the starting point and the length of the string. Next a long piece of string is cut in two places, allowing the children to see that the line can be stopped and in doing so a line segment and two end points are left.
Labels are written for each term and placed on the board in the appropriate place. The labels are read by everyone, then they are taken away and the children are asked to point to the different parts of the line. The labels are then given to the children and they are asked to place them back on the board in the correct position, allowing for trail and error.
In the next presentation we look at all the different positions of the line. to show the sensorial impression of positions of a straight line in a plane.
For this presentation we use the plane board and the stick box. The different line positions are constructed with the wooden coloured sticks from the stick box.
Again the different stick positions are read out and labelled. The children are asked to point to the different positions, then replace the labels.
Terms and vocabulary: perpendicular, horizontal, vertical, parallel, oblique, divergent, convergent.
