During the week we have been reading the book «A Squash and a Squeeze» by Julia Donaldson, a fun rhyming story about a «little old lady» who thinks her house is too small, so seeks the advice of a «wise old man», who tells her to take in a variety of farmyard animals and then, when she can fit no more, take them all out again leaving her with the feeling that her house was indeed quite spacious.
We have also been learning the song which has been adapted from the book and played various word games and role play activities based on the vocabulary from the story.
We discussed the meaning of the verbs «Squash» and «Squeeze» through actions and other verbs such as push, pull, run, jump, dance and we did several activities related to the story.
Animal noun game with prepositions: hen, goat, pig, cow – using flashcards the children were asked to take an animal and place it inside the house using the prepositions: next to, above, below.
Sequence game: Put the animal flashcards inside the house in the order they appear in the story and take them back out in reverse order.
Role-play and song: Through role play the children re-enacted the story, each choosing a character and learnt the song adapted from the story.
