In addition to our regular garden, we decided to create an urban garden next to our classrooms. The urban garden gave us the opportunity to watch seeds, roots, stems, flowers, leaves, and fruit develop on a daily basis. Older students were able to help younger students learn how to recognize and harvest mature fruit and vegetables. They were also able to plan the planting of both garden and container plants. The students were then able to compare and contrast the needs of the plants according to their environment. Older students also classified their garden plants. We hope to continue both garden projects next year as we strive to instill the historical and current importance of agriculture into the hearts of our children.
